Not to change when I > log > out? > Ted: As root, edit your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file look for a line in the section marked Screen that says Modes "1600x1200" edit that line so that the very first quoted screen resolution is your 1024xxxx then save that file. You can restart X at this point if you are not already in your preferred screen resolution, by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Bspace (all your applications will close).
