There is also a PDF printer http://www.physik.uni-wuerzburg.de/~vrbehr/cups-pdf/
which I hacked to be a png printer instead, it wasn't a difficult hack.
I've put my version up at http://home.att.net/~Tom.Horsley/cups-png-0.0.1.tar.gz
With this (once you get the printer installed), you can just print
anything (including PDF) and get a series of .png files, one per page
stashed in the spool directory.
