If you are running the nVidia binary driver, maybe stick your driver to vesa as a test and see if it makes any difference.
We had to reinstall the nvidia driver on one of our systems to get it to work again after yum update two days ago. The kernel module was ok, but the mesa updates (I guess) messed up things.
