I'm not a big fan of UTF-8 either =) In my case, I simply created a
~/.i18n file with this:

SUPPORTED="en_US.iso88591"

(or whatever charset you use)

Fedora will use this instead of system default (/etc/sysconfig/i18n) if
it exists.
