Either add another 256Mb of ram (or as much as you can) or run a small window manager like blackbox/fluxbox instead of gnome/kde. The partitions are odd, but that should not be the reason why your system is slow. One rule of thumb is to make a /home partition separate from / so that you can preserve /home when you upgrade/reinstall the system. /boot does not have to be a separate partition, but if it is, 100Mb is plenty of space. Some 10-15Gb should be enough for / /boot /var and swap combined. Give the rest to /home or /opt (for data). So a minimal partition scheme would be / 15Gb swap 1000 Mb (should be twice the size of RAM) /home the rest of the disk.
