I have a sony vaio laptop, the model is vgn-bx195ep, it is celeron processor...i installed fedora 6 and everything works apart from wireless and dvd, the wireless is more important! When booting, it says that "the device does not seem to be present" but it appears in my hardware list in control centre.. Any ideas? No, the /root/install.log just listed the packages installed up to the point where it failed. I got FC-6 installed on this machine by doing an absolutely minimal install in text mode without X, KDE, etc, and then installing everything I needed by "yum groupinstall". I'm afraid I don't think anaconda is a very reliable installation program. I have about 50% expectation that Fedora will install without problem on a given computer, while I have 90% expectation that Knoppix will run on the same machine. As an absolutely minimal improvement, I would suggest that anaconda should allow one to try a second installation of an rpm that fails, instead of just terminating the whole thing. (Windows XP allows this - so if there is a failure to install a file, taking out the CD and re-inserting it will often allow the intstallation to continue from where it failed.) I've had several apparent rpm failures during Fedora installations, but have never had any during normal yum usage after installation. -- Timothy Murphy e-mail (<80k only): tim /at/ birdsnest.maths.tcd.ie tel: +353-86-2336090, +353-1-2842366 s-mail: School of Mathematics, Trinity College, Dublin 2, Ireland ------------------------------ Message: 4 Date: Thu, 16 Nov 2006 12:42:14 +0000 From: Timothy Murphy <tim@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: Re: teTeX doesb't work on FC6 To: fedora-list@xxxxxxxxxx Message-ID: <ejhmb6$dv1$2@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Artur G. With the new hda not installed, hdc is the first hard disk the BIOS sees and hence it works? With the new hda installed, that's the first hard disk and since there's nothing on it, it won't boot. Perhaps you could boot the rescue CD and do the "sfdisk" operation from there? However, they were talking about a model that uses pwc. If yours has exactly the same compoents you could just try 'modprobe pwc' and see if that activates things, but I very much doubt it. I think you would have had it working quickly if that had been so. Your output given earlier talks about 'ZC3XX'. Googling for that gives a lot of references, though many of them are quite out-of-date. Anne -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... That is an odd error message. The raid devices should have names like /dev/md0 and only those names should appear in /etc/fstab. Grub refers to drive numbers, not letters, so I am wondering what is giving you that message. There are a couple of things that can cause problems. If you lost the only disk that grub was installed on (grub works with raw partitions and doesn't know about raid) then you will need to boot from a rescue CD to fix things up. Even if you made sure that grub was installed on multiple disks you still have to worry about hard drive order as after grub starts booting from the MBR of a device it finishes using a named (by hard drive order) hard drive and if that drive doesn't have what is expected on it (because that drive was lost or drives don't have the number expected after one was removed) the system won't boot. Unfortunately grub doesn't seem to have a way to say finish booting using the same drive you started on. (In my case I only have two drives, so I can just set them both to use drive 0 and be able to easily get things working with either one drive or with one drive replaced.) No matter what has happened, you should be able to fix things up by booting from the rescue CD. You should be able to repartition the new hda and use mdadm to add the partitions back into the appropiate mirrors. ------------------------------ -- fedora-list mailing list fedora-list@xxxxxxxxxx https://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/fedora-list End of fedora-list Digest, Vol 33, Issue 266 ******************************************** -- fedora-list mailing list fedora-list@xxxxxxxxxx To unsubscribe: https://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/fedora-list
