At long last I managed to convince the radeon driver to use my mode

my flickering problems. Full story at:

My brief diversion over to the fglrx drivers only produced even
worse bugs:

I'll have to try using it for a more extensive period of time, but
things that always triggered the flickering before only do it
occasionally now, and the screen stays stable most of the time,
so I'm hoping that the fun time I had digging through the X server
source code, backtracking from each error, deducing what magic
gibberish in xorg.conf would convince it to skip that check, then
getting the next error and doing ti again and again will pay off.
Documentation? We don't need no steenkin documentation, we got
source code :-) .
And now, the "config free" FC6 xorg.conf file is my largest and
most elaborate one ever!
Tom, any chance that you could post your system specs? In particular,
your video card, motherboard or system brand, and monitor type? I found
some info in the referenced bug reports but it would be nice to have a
complete record here.
BTW, I didn't have any problems at all getting my laptop working with
the radeon video driver (Radeon Xpress 200M video card) and x86_64 so
I'm kind of curious what characteristics of your system made life so
difficult for you. I wonder if it has something to do with your monitor
not reporting correctly.
Cheers,
Dave
