Can't help you other than say that it works here (and always has for
the benefit of those who've pointed out that the o/p should be
pressing "i" to insert text - pressing INSERT once puts it in insert
mode, a second time for replace mode (and toggles back and forth from
there).  Does the INSERT key work but simply does not display the --
INSERT -- text at the bottom?

Is vim still set up as alias for vi (either type alias and enter to
view aliases, or which vi which will tell you that vim is the alias
and where the binary for it is located)?

Does it do this for other users?  Can you create a new user and try it out?
