Thunderbird just wouldn't connect to the mail servers. Pressing the "Get

rather suspect it was something to do with doing a yum update while
keeping thunderbird open: when the old running thunderbird reached out
to some plugin-type shared lib that had been updated in the meanwhile
and is not always in use, it experienced difficulty. But it could
fundamentally keep going because of the old set of executables was still
in memory.
Assuming you didn't reboot or try it in the meanwhile, might be worth
closing thunderbird and verifying with ps -Af or your favourite set of
switches that thunderbird-bin is not 'go', then restarting.
