I use software from planetccrma, and at least for FC2, pmidi's available from there. I tried it and I know it's CLI, but doesn't crash like I've frequently found with Kmid. I doubt if it's available for FC6 yet from there, but maybe it's not FC version critical. Yoy mention the soundfont you tried only gave piano sounds. IIRC there are several soundfonts on the cards cdrom, but the complete set should be in. Audio > Common > SFBANK > CT4MGM.SF2 (which is the name of mine). And this is what I get running cat /proc/asound/card0/wavetableD1 .
