the current hal is hal-0.5.7.1, how to revert it to hal-0.5.7? there
are many dependencies on it. I can't simply do 'yum remove hal' and
then 'yum install hal'

Download the hal 0.5.7 rpms from a mirror near you. Then use rpm to
install them:

rpm -Uvh --old-package hal*-0.5.7-3.i386.rpm

Yum doesn't handled downgrades. There are other package managers that
do AFAIK, though I've not used any of them on fedora (smart and apt
spring to mind).

I also added hal to the excludes in /etc/yum.conf to keep the next yum
update from reinstalling the newer hal:

exclude=hal hal-devel hal-gnome

There is a yum plugin in Fedora Extras to allow downgrades - yum-allowdowngrade
