It happens as you describe. However, there is no way of safely
removing the media but removing it as root.

Yes, it is possible to mount and unmount a usb pen drive:

1. create the directory /media/mydisk

2. add the following line to /etc/fstab:

/dev/sdaX /media/mydisk vfat noauto,user 0 0
