I had the same problem. I restore the repomd.xml file from a backup and it worked fine after that. I suggest that you try restoring just that file. Tnx Brent Before reading your e-mail, I tried another road: I restored the fedora-updates.repo from a backup and it worked!!! It seems that something went wrong in the new file but now I have no time to investigate it.
