I've done something similar: Said yes, when it didn't work, then fiddle with things later. I can't remember what my problem was, but it wasn't muting. It does seem exceedingly stupid for a sound-card configuring utility not to unmute channels and normalise the levels, first. -- (Currently testing FC5, but still running FC4, if that's important.)
