If there is 'direct Connection' checked the internet should also work from other programms like ping. If you are using a proxy to connect to the internet from a local network it is absolute consequentially that you don't have a direct connection to access a imap-server for example. Otherwise please check you general internet settings. 'system-config-network'. Maybe there is no DNS-Server, so that you only can reach websites whichs IP-Adress is cached.
