Did you happen to enable the livna repository during the install? If
not and you had used it to enable mp3 playback in amarok on FC4, you
might have caused a dependency problem.

You'll probably have to enable the livna repo and install
amarok-extras-nonfree (and perhaps some other things) to get mp3
playback. This is how it is when you want to use a format with
strings attached to it.
I can't offer any advice on why flac isn't working for you.
