That was exactly the problem.
A little curious why fc6 install used the i586 where
all previous versions(3,4,5) that have been used on this box
where i686.

# uname -a
Linux xxx.xxx.com 2.6.18-1.2798.fc6 #1 SMP Mon Oct 16 14:54:20 EDT 2006 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

This may well be added to http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Bugs/FC6Common soon. The FC5 version of that page was well worth a look for people installing that release.
