This was absolutely disastrous. I'm not sure what happened, but after this cron job started, processor activity went all over the place, my memory maxed out, my swap space maxed out and my system locked up. I had to do a hard reboot. Turs out somehow the xterm line in my crontab file was repeated over 10,000 times. I can't really explain why but I got it working now anyways from another response.
