You'll probably have to mention a few sites, those that work and those
that don't.  Probably the reason is MIME type descriptions from the
site.

A website is supposed to *describe* the type of data that you're going
to receive (and I mean with HTTP headers; the filenames, or suffixes at
the end of them, aren't to be paid attention to).  

You may find that the sites that work right are sending the proper MIME
type, and your system is palming the data off to the preferred
application to handle it.  And, with the sites that don't, you'll end up
downloading the data for you to handle, yourself.
