i normally run "yum check-update" once a day in in the last weeks
i always get some (not every day but very often). since the last
two weeks there were no updates...

any idea why?

It appears that Fedora Core 4 has been transferred into "maintenance mode" due to the upcoming Fedora Core 6 release. While I initially thought they supported Fedora for slightly longer than two full versions, the legacy page describes this transition has already occurred. You can still get security updates through the Fedora Legacy project:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Legacy
and
http://www.fedoralegacy.org/
