If that solves the problem, then divide and conquer it : until you find something. I removed my .emacs file and the couple of foreign .el files I had the system. Same problem. I asked someone else I know who runs FC5 to try doing C-x 8 ! and they locked up too. So I submitted a bug report. Thanks for your help.
