In what way did you try adding them? Taking FC4 as an example, but the same thing worked on a friend's FC5 box - if I hit the e key to temporarily edit the GRUB menu options before booting, and add a 1 to the end of this line, it works: kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.17-1.2142_FC4 ro root=/dev/hda7 acpi=force -- (Currently running FC4, occasionally trying FC5.)
