In redhat 9, it used to work so nicely:

Shutdown, replace NIC, start.

Kudzu asks:

Do you want to remove the old NIC? yes
Do you want to configure the new NIC? yes
Do you want to migrate the settings for the old NIC
to the new? yes

Then it works!
