Don't have it on at boot time.
Instead, boot, then attach the USB drive.
Use fdisk to repartiton it so you eliminate the _probably_ conflicting
labels.
Finally, use mke2fs for each of the new partitions and you will be ready
to use it.

The usb drive will show up as sda, not hda
