snd-hda-intel can be configured to use different codec chips and also some workarounds. For example on this laptop it needs this to work right in /etc/modprobe.conf
options snd-hda-intel index=0 single_cmd=1 model=laptop-eapd modinfo snd-hda-intel will give some clues for more options. -Andy
