Thanks Tod for the suggestions but I think it really is HW. I'm going
to try and find some headphones to test things with, though. Just in
case. As for trying other sound cards, this is a laptop I'm on.

Hi again Joe!

Laptop (oh Noooooo!),

OK then. Google the Brand Name Model Number and the words "Linux no
sound". If nothing pops up, remove the model number and replace with
the word "laptop". Keep removing words (or adding if you think of a
good key) until you get someone else out there who has (hopefully)
solved the problem you are now looking at.

BTW, your problem caused me to join the Linux sound developers list.
When I join such a list I make extensive use of the archives (anybody
can - copy from the URL line in your browser the URL of the archive,
bring up Google, select "Advanced Search" at the end of the the search
key window (right end top), paste the URL in the "Domain" key window
(about 7th down - window on far right) and place your keys in the top
section). I "lurk" for a time to see if I have anything appropriate
to ask or add, and then I do.

Thanks for the inspiration!

Tod
