A "quick and dirty" fix would be to run "export LANG=en_US". This will only help until you log out. You can also play with the font encoding in PuTTY. Try changing the Window --> Translation setting. Checking the "Override with UTF-8 ..." box or setting the UTF-8 character encoding may do the trick.
