Have you tried making sure that all devices are plugged in and their power on prior to the install? Also make sure that the CMOS setup on your processor is set up for "plug and play" OS as this doesn't just apply to Windoze. Also, power everything down and then up again before you start the install. I have found that trying to do an upgrade doesn't work : it's far better to install from scratch. If you can, make sure your /home is safe, preferably on a second HD which you use just for that purpose.
