Well, you can try the brute force and ignorance approach: Copy your already downloaded updated files (now say that ten times quickly...), over to the /var/cache/yum/updates/packages/ where YUM will normally download files to and cache them. But since they're already there, it won't download them again, but will still go through it's usual motions to find out what it needs to do. -- (Currently running FC4, occasionally trying FC5.)
