Thanks for this Paul.  The problem appears to be with the applications 
themselves.

Kaddressbook does a full search as soon as it starts and works.

KMail doesn't even connect to the LDAP server, even when forced to used the 
LDAP service.

Outlook Express only seems to do a search if you go into Address Book -> Find 
People. It doesn't seem to want to just pull in the list as Kaddressbook does

Outlook 2002 looks like it wants to work properly, but refuses to set the 
search base and ignores the values I put into the search base field in the 
config window.  It therefore doesn't recieve any hits.
