We don't know what your needs are...since you didn't tell us.  :-)

If you are going to make adjustments to options in the kernel...like
disabling certain features/modules...then you need source to roll your
own kernel.

If you are just compiling a module that needs to then be loaded into
your existing running kernel...then you just need kernel-devel.
