-ignsize
Ignore the known size of the medium. This option

purposes don’t
use it for other reasons. It is not needed to write

more than the nominal capacity. This option implies
-overburn.
so it doesn't sound as though that would be the solution.
In order to rule out some of the possible causes I did try to write a
straightforward data dvd backup in k3b - something I do regularly on
this workstation. Both boxes have the same version of cdrecord. On
the box that I'm trying to backup I cannot get a dvd backup. On this
one there is no problem. On the problematic one I keep seeing
references to pread642(2)

Can you attempt to use a different DVD media? in the past, when I
have seen cdrecord spit,
Disk type: unknown dye (reserved id code)
A change in media manufacturers or a double check on +R/-R
capabilities and disc types does the trick.
I haven't been following this issue, but are you using the correct
device (dev=cdrom)
On my particular computer I have two cd/dvd readers, but you can write
to only one. I mounted a dvd on the writer device.
It came out to be /mnt/cdrom1. I found that /mnt/cdrom1 was a link to
/dev/scd0
I cd record to /dev/cdwriter:@ and I dvd record to /dev/scd0
