Shouldn't that be "grub-install /dev/sda"?

You might have to show us the output of "fdisk -l" (that's a lower-case
L, not a number 1), so we know what drive partitions are being used for
what, to give you better advice.  It sounds like you're asking GRUB to
boot from the wrong partition.
