This is a bare metal FC5 install, updated. If you're running SELinux, some program [probably VMware] may have modified /etc/services and changed its context. Try /sbin/restorecon/etc/services The output of ls -Z /etc/services should be: -rw-r--r-- root root system_u:object_r:etc_t /etc/services
