It sounds like you only have the root file system mounted for some
reason. If this is the case, and /data is the mountpoint for a
partition, then it will show up as empty until the partition is
mounted there. It is hard to say what the problem is without more
information. Two things that would help.

Run "mount" and post the results.
Post the contents of /etc/fstab.
