Strange Thunderbird problem

Hi,

since Thunderbird >1.5 I have a strange problem when copying large mails
from my IMAP account to local folders. Thunderbird would partially
download the mail, then stop, after some time say that the connection
has timed out and then stop responding. Compacting folders or deleting
.msf file did not solve the problem.
When I tried

strace -f thunderbird

to see where it gets stuck, everything worked fine, I could copy around
my mails as I liked.

Any idea what could cause this behaviour?
