It does not look one bit like an 8 on my screen so I suspect bad configuration on the user side, no knowledge of usual 0 presentation in technical fonts, too little time spent with DejaVu Mono to train its eyes, or some mix of all these causes. The basic latin part of Vera Sans Mono (which DejaVu Sans Mono) inherits has been audited to death by all the Gnome, Xorg and Freedesktop developers precisely to disambiguate 0O, lI1 and other combos font usually do bad (precisely because most hackers use a mono variant as their primary font). Nothing is perfect, so it can certainly be perfected, but its current level is pretty good. -- Nicolas Mailhot
