Yeah, they need to be enabled to run first.  They're off by default.

- From the command line you can use chkconfig to enable services.  E.g.

    # chkconfig httpd on

There is a graphical tool to do this as well, in gnome I believe it's
on the System -> Administration menu.  I don't the name off the top of
my head and I don't have it installed here.
