 thanks jdow, Tony.

my /home (where i keep my
var_yum cache) was at 95%,
somewhat marginal, but as it
had about 16 gig left, i assumed
it sufficed.

considering Tony's advice,
(and seeing as how i had some
dsl trouble when i started)
i:

1) deleted all new packages
2) yum clean headers
3) yum clean metadata
4) yum update

it has downloaded 26 of 50 packages,
without a hiccup. openoffice.org-core
is taking a long time, but i'm pretty
sure we have a solution.

thanks guys.
