Sounds like hardware. I recently had a problem with my CD/DVD drive and it was a new one. I was annoyed that I'd have to go through the motions of returning it. It was acting wacky, sometimes working, sometimes not. I did have an older spare CD drive, so I opened the case and was about to remove the drive when I noticed the power cable connector to the drive was loose.
