Certainly at least a couple of those were things I had indeed removed.
I'm in process of downloading the backup data with scp from the problem
machine to the testbed one that I already downgraded; once that finishes,
I'll try logging out, logging back in, logging into the new user (called
GnomeTest), and if need be rebooting; and then report back. Many thanks to
