Thanks very much.
This led me to
<https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-list/2006-May/msg04431.html>
which gave the solution to the problem.

In brief, one has to go to
Control Centre=>Peripherals=>Printers,
click on Print Manager/Configure Manager,
and go to CUPS Server
and correct the information for Host:

In my case I put "localhost" on my desktop,
to which the printer is attached (via the parallel port),
and on my laptop I put "alfred", the name of the desktop.

Now when I tried to print an email message within kmail
on my desktop, I still got an error - no printer was shown.
I had to click on the wand, go into the KDE Add Printer wizard,
and give the correct information for the printer "lj" there.
It warned me that it was over-writing the information for "lj"
(recall that CUPS printing already worked perfectly for me
outside of kmail),
but after this I was able to print email within kmail
on both desktop and laptop.
