Many thanks to all who responded to my problem. You are a great bunch. On the advice of several of the list members, I booted in Knoppix. Instead of letting Knoppix mount the file systems in the default read only, I manually mounted the root partition in the RW option. That did the trick. I edited the fstab file back to the way it was before I screwed up, and everything has returned to normal.
