Identifying the kernel update that introduced the problem in the
bugzilla report should help.

If your processor is reasonably fast, vmware is a usable
option.  Let a rock-solid distribution drive the hardware
and then load one or more new/experimental distros to get
current apps without breaking anything.  Maybe someday
xen can be used that way.
