If you got no message like:

ln: creating symbolic link `default' to `/etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/scim':
File exists

Then you didn't do it before!

> $ ls -l ~/.xinput.d/default
> lrwxrwxrwx 1 satimis satimis 28 May  4 15:36
> /home/satimis/.xinput.d/default -> /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/scim

Now it is....

Did you log totally out and back in?  Or, did you run scim-restart?
