Oh, it is probably no problem to read it in your email client. That is
not the issue. The problem is in KDE applications such as konsole.

According to a previous message from Jens this should not be a problem
since KDE and GNOME use the same fonts.....

Well....I tried again with konsole and gnome-terminal.

This is when logging in with a LANG=en_US.UTF-8.

When entering Simplified Chinese gnome-terminal will have the following
font files open:

 /usr/lib/libfontconfig.so.1.0.4
 /usr/share/fonts/chinese/TrueType/uming.ttf
 /usr/share/fonts/japanese/TrueType/sazanami-gothic.ttf
 /usr/share/X11/fonts/Type1/l047013t.pfa
 /usr/share/X11/fonts/Type1/l048013t.pfa
 /usr/share/fonts/default/Type1/n019003l.pfb
 /usr/share/fonts/bitstream-vera/Vera.ttf
 /home/egreshko/.rh-fontconfig/.fonts.cache-2
 /home/egreshko/.rh-fontconfig/.fonts.cache-2

While konsole has the following open:

 /usr/lib/libfontconfig.so.1.0.4
 /usr/share/fonts/default/Type1/n019003l.pfb
 /usr/share/fonts/japanese/TrueType/sazanami-gothic.ttf
 /usr/share/fonts/bitmap-fonts/console9x15.pcf
 /usr/share/fonts/bitmap-fonts/console8x16.pcf
 /usr/share/X11/fonts/Type1/l047013t.pfa
 /usr/share/X11/fonts/Type1/l048013t.pfa
 /home/egreshko/.rh-fontconfig/.fonts.cache-2 (path inode=917547)
 /home/egreshko/.rh-fontconfig/.fonts.cache-2

However, if I select my Language as Mainland Chinese prior to login then
my LANG variable would be set to zh_CN.UTF-8. Low and behold, knosole
now has the /usr/share/fonts/chinese/TrueType/uming.ttf font file open
and I can enter/display that character just fine.

IMHO, KDE applications are broken.
