It appears that there is a major bug in Xorg 7 which prevents FC5 from using the i810 driver:

  https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5443

This bug also affects Ubuntu Dapper and OpenSuSE 10.1. It looks like we will have to wait until this bug is fixed to get things to work properly. For the time being, I am using the vesa driver, as someone advised above, which is far from ideal, as no matter how much I tinker with xorg.conf I can't get it to display above 800x600. :(
