Rather odd that I am the only one with this problem. Here is what
happens when I try to install the package (this is changed behaviour;
before the rpm program needed to be interrupted before it terminated):

$ sudo rpm -ihv --replacefiles --replacepkgs
/var/cache/yum/updates-released/packages/kernel-smp-2.6.16-1.2096_FC5.i686.rpm
Preparing...       ########################################### [100%]
   1:kernel-smp    ########################################### [100%]
error: unpacking of archive failed on file
/lib/modules/2.6.16-1.2096_FC5smp/kernel/drivers/crypto/padlock.ko;4457b87b:
cpio: read

I would be grateful for any suggestions.

OK, what have you left out? You say you updated your FC4 system, yet
I see that you are installing an FC5 kernel. Something does not add
up. Are you running FC4 or FC5 on this box?
