Hi all. The Google Summer of Code 2011 student application deadline is approaching quickly (April 8th). I would like to draw your attention to the Fedora Robotics project. The Fedora Robotics SIG has proposed a project that involves developing a demonstration application that highlights some of the features of the Fedora Robotics Suite, a set of packages which has been accepted as feature into F-15. In particular a GUI application is to be written which will pose tasks to the user that she has to solve by instructing the robot. Starting to go somewhere by clicking in the map, to writing a script following waypoints, and eventually moving an object from one place in the map to another scripting the robot in Lua. Some of the features of the Fedora Robotics Suite are the Fawkes robot software framework (http://www.fawkesrobotics.org), the Player framework, and the Stage simulator (http://playerstage.sourceforge.net). For all of these projects upstream developers are part of the SIG therefore providing a close contact and good chances of getting patches upstreamed! Some more information is available at https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Summer_coding_ideas_for_2011#Educational_Application_for_Fedora_Robotics_Suite To participate you should have a background in C++ programming and be willing to dive into the world of robot software. Gtkmm knowledge is a plus. Since you would work in a simulation environment, no particular hardware is required. So maybe you find robots as cool as we do and want to have some fun to hack a machine to do things in the simulation for you, and maybe later in the real world. If so please go to http://www.google-melange.com and file your application for this project with The Fedora Project.
