Unfortunately, I have no idea what was going wrong.
It will be nice, if someone have a hint.
One of the installed files contains the string
"/var/tmp/gnu-smalltalk-2.3.3-root-mockbuild" - i.e. the mock build
directory. This is bad because no installed files should reference the
build directory path.
This is odd though because I wouldn't expect this to be a ppc64 only issue.
